Research:

I am interested in the role of neurosteroids in the pathogenesisof depression. Specifically we are using a model of prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) toinvestigate the extent to which early alterations in HPA axis developmentelicits persistent changes in 5HT and DA neurotransmitter systems. Specificobjectives to be addressed are as follows: (1) To examine the effects of PAEon stress-induced alterations in serotonergic and dopaminergic systems(basal level changes and stress-evoked change); (2) To investigate whetherantidepressant therapies can reverse the alterations found in serontonin anddopaminergic pathways. All studies will include both male and female rats inorder to understand sex differences in outcome and the role of gonadalhormones in mediating these effects.
